The practical answer is immigration. My green card process has taken many years to complete, which kept me in the same industry longer than I might otherwise have planned.
Fortunately, the industry has been in its infancy, and the work has continually evolved. I had the chance to help bring an established global product into a new and rapidly changing market, working through how to deliver fun, exciting product enhancements in a safe and responsible way.
My role evolved too. I worked as a Design Director, a player-coach, and a Principal IC across Horse Racing and Sportsbook. The industry stayed consistent, but the problems, teams, and customers did not.
I would bring a clear point of view, strong product judgment and the flexibility to work at the level the role needs.
I would start by understanding the product, the business, the customers and the team, then focus on where design can make the biggest difference.
That could mean shaping direction, improving delivery, developing designers or working directly with product and engineering. The goal is always the same: create clarity, raise the quality of decisions and help the team deliver better outcomes.
I can work effectively as a manager, a player-coach or a senior IC. The quality of the challenge matters more to me than the title.
I genuinely enjoy leading teams, setting direction, coaching designers and helping people grow. I also enjoy staying close to the product, working through flows, prototypes, interaction details and delivery with engineering partners.
The common thread is influence. I want to improve the quality of decisions, help the team move forward and stay close enough to the work to affect the outcome.
That could be a Principal, Staff, Lead IC or hands-on Design Director role, provided the challenge is meaningful and design has room to shape the product.
I am using AI to move faster, broaden my thinking and spend less time on work that can be automated.
Figma Make, Claude, ChatGPT and Codex are now part of how I explore directions, challenge assumptions, prototype ideas and tighten the path from thinking to delivery. I am also testing other tools to understand where they genuinely improve the process and where they simply create more noise.
This portfolio is one of my main experimentation spaces. I use it to try new workflows across research, content, design and implementation, then keep the parts that make the work better.
The goal is not to hand over the thinking. It is to remove friction around it so I can spend more time on judgment, quality and the decisions that matter.
